sweetbites

I was pretty excited when I heard that there was going to be another sweets truck coming to DC, especially since this one served more than just cupcakes! Unfortunately, the Sweetbites Truck never came around to my part of the city. (-___-) Finally, I just had to seek it out myself! I took an extended lunch a few weeks ago and metro’d over to Farragut Square to snag myself some sweetness. X)

I ended up getting only cupcakes after all, since the non-cupcake items I had wanted to try had already been sold out. Pictured above is the cookies and cream cupcake, described as having “creamy Oreo-infused frosting swirled atop a rich Belgian chocolate cupcake.” It’s topped off with a half-Oreo. It looked so good I had to scarf it down right there in the park! The icing was oozing from the sweltering heat but still tasted fabulous.

I had to set the cupcake down on a flat surface to photograph, so I grabbed the only thing I had on me at the time. (Any guesses as to what book that is? Lol).

Cupcakes by Heather & Lori

I was walking through the high end shopping district of Robson Street in downtown Vancouver when I saw a pretty pink awning and a sign that was sure to catch my eye: Cupcakes by Heather and Lori. Of course, I had to go inside and see what they had. The store was adorable, and so were the cupcakes! Loved that they came in three different sizes for all your cupcake needs. I wanted to try a whole variety of flavors, so I opted to get a package of the mini size. (^O^)v

There was lemon with a sliver of jellied lemon candy… Chocolate cake with mocha butter cream topped with an espresso bean… Chocolate cake with raspberry butter cream and red sprinkles… Coconut cake with cream cheese frosting and coconut shavings…just to name a few. I wish I remembered what the blue frosting was! XD

I also wish that more cupcakeries in my area would do the mini size. That way, you could try more flavors without the guilt of having scarfed down a whole full-sized cupcake!

Hello Cupcake

Today, The Washington Post reported that New York’s Crumbs cupcake shop will be opening their first D.C. store in May at the corner of 11th and F, NW. The owner was quoted as saying that Washingtonians are cupcake n00bs and that we need to be schooled (by them, I guess) on the true magnificence of The Cupcake. This threw a few locals into a bit of tizzy, which I found rather amusing. So a New Yorker wants to talk smack about cupcakes. “Whatever, whatever,” as Mike Isabella would say. Hell if I care, just give me my cupcake!!!1! \(^O^)/

…on that note: Hello Cupcake! I’ve blogged this place before, but that was only one flavor, so thought I’d revisit it again to post a few more. This isn’t really my favorite cupcake shop in town, but they do have a lot of flavors, which is nice. It can be hit-or-miss, so it’s important to select wisely.

Pictured at the top is the triple coconut, which is one of their better ones. The cake was light and airy, and I thought the icing was creamy and nice! Made with a trio of coconut cake, coconut cream cheese frosting, and toasted coconut flakes.

Georgetown Cupcake

Oh look, cupcakes from New Year’s Eve! Fear not, these were consumed a long time ago, rapidly and while in their peak freshness. I’d never let a perfect batch of fabulous Georgetown Cupcakes go to waste, after all! It’s just another case of slow blogging. XD;;

These were actually purchased at their newish Bethesda branch. I stopped in there for the first time about a month ago near the end of 2009. The shop is small, though maybe has a tad more room than their (old) Georgetown location. The good thing about stopping in so soon after Christmas was that they had their holiday flavors still available. X) Counter clockwise from the bottom left, the flavors here are: eggnog, gingerbread, New Year’s cupcake, chocolate peppermint, white chocolate peppermint, and another New Year’s cupcake.

Curbside Cupcakes

I still haven’t managed to set aside the block of time that will be necessary for my San Fran dinner post. m(_ _)m So here’s another quick post update, to bring you something that’s been popping up more and more in my area – and in all variations – the Twittering food trucks!

I think it all started with Fojol brothers, the Indian food vender who now comes by my neighborhood once a week with their tasty offerings. =9 Curbside Cupcakes launched a few weeks ago, and they too, work out of a truck and Twitter their location once they arrive.

So far, they’ve come by Metro Center a few times, and yesterday they were just outside my building! ♥ I had to try their holiday flavor, the chocolate peppermint (pictured above). Delicious! The frosting was not overly sweet, and didn’t taste too much of fake mint. Loved the crushed candy cane sprinkled on top.

Thanksgiving!

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!! I’m a little backed up in posts, and I haven’t even gotten to my San Francisco material yet. However, I’m skipping ahead to do my Thanksgiving post now, before it gets so pushed back that you’re reading about it at Christmas. XD;;

So this year, I was invited again to my dear friends’ I & N’s place. (You know, I’m never quite sure if I ought to use real names here…if I blog about you, let me know if you mind?) It was as fabulous a spread as it was the year before, both food and company wise! The first thing that caught my eye when I entered the dining room at a quarter to four was of course, this gorgeous turkey pictured above, brined and cooked via a great recipe by Alton Brown. Several side dishes already lined the table, while numerous others were finishing in the oven. There were so many dishes it was hard to keep up!

I tried to take at least a bite of everything, but there’s sadly only a finite amount of food I can throw back in one sitting. There’s much to get through, so without further ado:

Red Velvet Cupcakery

For my birthday earlier this month, my dear friend bought be a dozen cupcakes from Red Velvet Cupcakery! \(^O^)/ Red Velvet is a cupcake shop located dangerously close to my office in downtown D.C. Actually, it’s not exactly an easy distance for a quick break, so I don’t find myself in there too often. This is a good thing, because it’s much too tempting, otherwise!

Their Penn Quarter shop has been open for a while now, and they recently opened a new one in Dupont Circle as well. (Whoa, rivalry with the other Dupont cupcakery, Hello Cupcake!) These cupcake shops seem to be springing up everywhere. Is there room enough in this town for them all!? Georgetown Cupcake may have the best in the city, but Red Velvet has an edge over Hello for the Dupont shops in my opinion. Hello may have better flavor selections and slightly cheaper prices, but I think Red Velvet cupcakes have better icing, and moister cakes that stay fresh longer.

But here’s something rather vexing about them: I can’t look up the exact cupcake flavors because Red Velvet has mysteriously changed their website! It’s now a very ugly and unhelpful single page (no links to flavors or anything), which looks neither appetizing nor inviting. They used to have such a pretty website. What happened?

Something Sweet

Whee~ new bakery in town! \(^O^)/ And it’s down by 2 Amys Pizza in Woodley Park on Macomb Street, so I imagine they get a lot of the post-lunch/dinner crowd hankering for a little …well, Something Sweet.

Confession: I haven’t actually been there. Still, I am blatantly blogging about it anyway because I can! Fellow foodie Nevin stopped in there last Friday and picked up a few cupcakes, of which I got to sample two. ♥ Actually, these cupcakes were scarfed down in the car on the way to The Counter (see previous post). Me + eating + vehicle = not a good idea. I got icing and crumbs all over myself, but most of the tasty made its way into my mouth. o(^__^)o

Here’s the orange cupcake with chocolate ganache. The icing was not too sweet, in a good way. The cake had a hint of citrus, and reminded me of madeleines. Very good for a cupcake that was being consumed 2 days later, after some refrigeration. I’m sure it was excellent at its freshest peak.

Btw, the pirate thing is a plastic ring, which you can have stuck onto your cupcake. I think this is for the benefit of delighting little kids, and uh, Nevin.

S'mores Cupcake

Anthony Bourdain once famously said that vegans were the “Hezbollah-like splinter faction” of vegetarians. And…I have to admit, that made me chuckle a lot. While I have respect for people who can keep up such a diet, it is just way too extreme for me! What kind of foodie life will it be without real butter, dairy, and all the fatty accoutrements of good eats??

However…

ZOMG there it is, the vegan s’mores cupcake. And it is delicious, WTF. So moist! So creamy! And totally dairy free! HOW DO THEY DO IT?? I really don’t know, but I have to say I’ve found one of my favorite cupcake makers in the city, and it is Sticky Fingers Bakery in Columbia Heights. Mmmm….

Need to try their other flavors too. ♥

Peppermint Penny Cupcake

Every so often I get a cupcake craving and I just have to have one. Does that ever happen to you? They’re like miniature cakes, delightful spongy goodness topped with decadent swirls of frosted fun. They’re cute and whimsy…what’s not to love?

Anyway, I got such a craving last Friday, so I headed over to Dupont Circle on my lunch break to Hello Cupcake, one of the fine cupcakeries in town. Specifically, I was on a mission to try their “Strawberry Fields,” their seasonal selection of strawberry cake with strawberry frosting. Unfortunately, I was told that they had actually “discontinued” that flavor. I wonder why the flavor is posted on their website if it’s no longer available? =/

I ended up getting two “Prima Donnas” (chocolate cake with strawberry buttercream) and a “Peppermint Penny” (chocolate cake with mint frosting). The Prima Donna is one of my favorites from Hello. The frosting tastes almost like strawberry candy, with a slight tartness mixed in with the sweet. Peppermint Penny is definitely minty, and the chocolate chip sprinkles on top are a nice touch.

They’re very generous with the frosting here…maybe too generous. The frosting’s really sweet, so a huge mountain of the stuff tends to overpower the cupcake. I think if the frosting were less sweet, I wouldn’t mind the portion as much.

By the way, my cupcakes got knocked around a little bit on the metro ride home, which is why there’s strawberry frosting crusted on to my mint cupcake! And I had to photograph it from the side with fewer chocolate chips, because the other side got flattened in the box. Oops!! XD;;;
