Captain White’s Seafood

Captain White’s Seafood City is located on the Southwest Waterfront, right on the water. It’s pretty chaotic getting in there, and trying to find parking is pretty tricky business. However, it’s worth the effort if you’re a seafood lover! My friends and I checked it out last Saturday afternoon, and the place was swamped with people. We waited for seemed like forever to get our food. (O____o);;

I got the clams and fries box, pictured above. It’s a lot of food for a good price! I should have gotten some packets of cocktail sauce, but I was too lazy to walk back there from the seating area to fetch any. XD;;

Crepes on the Walk

Crepes on the Walk is a cute little crepes stand by the Verizon Center (which I still call the MCI Center sometimes), and it’s part of the Crepes a Go Go family of creperies. Their website has mysteriously disappeared, so I can’t link you, but hopefully they’re still around?

I imagine that this stand gets a lot of business because of its prime location, and also because crepes are the ideal sort of streetfood. Sweet or savory, whatever suits your fancy, they’ve got it. It comes folded up and tucked neatly inside a paper cone for easy handling. X) They have a nice menu of items, but of course, you can select your own combination of ingredients as you like, which is nice…if a little daunting. Cupcakes by Heather & Lori

I was walking through the high end shopping district of Robson Street in downtown Vancouver when I saw a pretty pink awning and a sign that was sure to catch my eye: Cupcakes by Heather and Lori. Of course, I had to go inside and see what they had. The store was adorable, and so were the cupcakes! Loved that they came in three different sizes for all your cupcake needs. I wanted to try a whole variety of flavors, so I opted to get a package of the mini size. (^O^)v

There was lemon with a sliver of jellied lemon candy… Chocolate cake with mocha butter cream topped with an espresso bean… Chocolate cake with raspberry butter cream and red sprinkles… Coconut cake with cream cheese frosting and coconut shavings…just to name a few. I wish I remembered what the blue frosting was! XD

I also wish that more cupcakeries in my area would do the mini size. That way, you could try more flavors without the guilt of having scarfed down a whole full-sized cupcake!

La Casa Gelato

If you google “gelato Vancouver,” chances are your first hit will be La Casa Gelato, an unbelievable tour de force of gelatoverse that boasts over 200 flavors. It’s located in the middle of no where (it certainly seemed that way to me, though I didn’t pay too much attention to my bearings en route), but its selection is so vast and awesome, I’m sure people would travel out of their way to visit this shop.

Flavors ranged from classic to crazy, with some petering on the edge of unfathomable or frightening. Browsing the flavors and tasting them was an experience in itself, and I though I didn’t love every flavor I tasted, I had to admire the vision and bravery that went into an operation that could whip up a batch of curry flavored gelato!

I must have tasted a dozen flavors at least, including a few “surprise” ones that my brother so nicely offered to me. But in the end I chose the marzipan, pictured above. It had a lovely hint of that sweet almond paste that I so love. I wish I could have it again!

Granville Island

Granville Island was one of my favorite places in Vancouver! So much so that in the short few days I was in the city, we went there twice…even though it took a couple bus transfers and a hike to get there. It’s a marketplace that has everything you could possibly want (almost), from fresh produce and seafood to fancy baked items and chocolates. If I lived in Vancouver, I would try to make my way out there every week. (*___*)♥ Love!

The market itself is indoors, housed in a very large building that holds dozens of vendors. I could spend hours browsing the aisles! There was a tiny booth specializing in tea, complete with a mini counter where you could drink your freshly brewed cuppa. Counters upon counters of delicate and delicious looking pastries that made my mouth water. A large shiny display of fresh caught salmon – pricey but well worth it (we took home a few to cook for dinner). There were soup counters, spice sellers, coffee vendors and candy makers. Even a shop that specialized in pies – both sweet and savory.

You could also shop for non-food items, like handmade crafts, fine art, photographs and the like. The second market building next door had more of those crafty shops too, though it seemed that those stores were more established ones, compared to the more casual market vendor feel in the main building.

Georgetown Cupcake

Oh look, cupcakes from New Year’s Eve! Fear not, these were consumed a long time ago, rapidly and while in their peak freshness. I’d never let a perfect batch of fabulous Georgetown Cupcakes go to waste, after all! It’s just another case of slow blogging. XD;;

These were actually purchased at their newish Bethesda branch. I stopped in there for the first time about a month ago near the end of 2009. The shop is small, though maybe has a tad more room than their (old) Georgetown location. The good thing about stopping in so soon after Christmas was that they had their holiday flavors still available. X) Counter clockwise from the bottom left, the flavors here are: eggnog, gingerbread, New Year’s cupcake, chocolate peppermint, white chocolate peppermint, and another New Year’s cupcake.

Cacao

There’s a lovely pastry and chocolate shop in Bethesda called Cacao, which I discovered a few winters ago during the Christmas season. I usually get pastries when I stop in there, so this would mark the first time I’d tried their truffles and macaroons.

Aren’t the macaroons cute? X) I could’ve selected the flavors myself, but they had such a variety of them, I just asked them to mix them all up for me. I liked them! Very nice and light on the outside, and creamy and smooth on the inside. There was one particular one I enjoyed, which had a slightly floral taste.

Fran’s Chocolates

I love the taste of caramel, but I find most of them too hard to chew! (;___;) Not so in this case though, I’m happy to say. I’d never heard of Fran’s chocolates before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by their caramels, which I found extremely soft, delicious and addicting.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone! \(^O^)/ Hope you had a great start to 2010, and a lovely winter holiday. I apologize for neglecting this blog for the past few weeks. I kept meaning to update, but it’s been a bit of a lazy Christmas season for me. I’m resolving to be more active hereon for the new year, and to catch up on my backlog of posts I’ve been meaning to get to for a while.

New Year happens to be the biggest holiday of the year for Japanese people, and like most celebrations, it centers around the food. Wiki has an article about the traditional “osechi” food here, which is served on New Year’s Day. My mom prepares it every year, though this year’s spread was much more scaled back than usual.

But first, we must have the “toshi-koshi” noodles on New Year’s eve:

Merry Christmas!

I know…am very late with this post. But I figured I might as well put it up, since I had the photo on hand, and because it looks so cute. XD;

This Bûche de Noël cake is from Whole Foods. I’ve gotten log cakes from different places in the last several years, and this is certainly one of the more festive looking ones. Unfortunately, it looked a lot better than it tasted! The outer frosting was made from a very oily butter cream, and had the consistency of Crisco. Ugh. The chocolate frosting on the inside was a little lighter, though not too much better. The flavor of the cake itself wasn’t bad though, and had good texture.

I’ll be looking elsewhere for a Bûche de Noël next year, though.

Sweet Green

Mmm…lovely Sweet Green! Among the latest in food trucks to hit the streets of D.C., Sweet Green serves up some tasty frozen yogurt and salads, Tweeting their location as they go. They’ve recently started coming to Metro Center on Fridays, so I finally had a chance to try them out.
The yogurt came in a couple sizes, with three toppings included in the standard cup size for a total cost of $5. For toppings, there was a pretty good selection of fresh fruit, nuts, coconut shavings and mint. I got mine with baked apples, strawberries, and mint. (*____*) Soooo good. The yogurt was very fresh, and had a little tartness to it, but not too much. (I always found the popular froyo’s too sour for my taste). Loved it!

Curbside Cupcakes

I still haven’t managed to set aside the block of time that will be necessary for my San Fran dinner post. m(_ _)m So here’s another quick post update, to bring you something that’s been popping up more and more in my area – and in all variations – the Twittering food trucks!

I think it all started with Fojol brothers, the Indian food vender who now comes by my neighborhood once a week with their tasty offerings. =9 Curbside Cupcakes launched a few weeks ago, and they too, work out of a truck and Twitter their location once they arrive.

So far, they’ve come by Metro Center a few times, and yesterday they were just outside my building! ♥ I had to try their holiday flavor, the chocolate peppermint (pictured above). Delicious! The frosting was not overly sweet, and didn’t taste too much of fake mint. Loved the crushed candy cane sprinkled on top.

Thanksgiving!

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!! I’m a little backed up in posts, and I haven’t even gotten to my San Francisco material yet. However, I’m skipping ahead to do my Thanksgiving post now, before it gets so pushed back that you’re reading about it at Christmas. XD;;

So this year, I was invited again to my dear friends’ I & N’s place. (You know, I’m never quite sure if I ought to use real names here…if I blog about you, let me know if you mind?) It was as fabulous a spread as it was the year before, both food and company wise! The first thing that caught my eye when I entered the dining room at a quarter to four was of course, this gorgeous turkey pictured above, brined and cooked via a great recipe by Alton Brown. Several side dishes already lined the table, while numerous others were finishing in the oven. There were so many dishes it was hard to keep up!

I tried to take at least a bite of everything, but there’s sadly only a finite amount of food I can throw back in one sitting. There’s much to get through, so without further ado:

Penn Quarter Farmer's Market

First off, apologies about the previous post on Cafe Atlantico. I was messing around with the edit function on WordPress’s iPhone app and managed to delete the majority of the post! It’s been fixed (in other words, rewritten from scratch), so if you were wondering where the rest of the post was, it’s back. (^___^)b

So, Penn Quarter holds a farmer’s market every Thursday from 3~7pm between the months of April and December. They’re relatively small in comparison to markets I’ve seen elsewhere, but it’s quite accessible at least. It’s located on 8th Street near E, close to the Gallery Place Chinatown Metro station.

I popped over there a few weeks ago and picked up some nectarines. They were incredibly flavorful and juicy! But I suppose it’s never a guarantee from week to week, and I found that the nectarines I picked up the following week weren’t as juicy.

Stella's Bakery

Yay~ lovely pastries from Stella’s! I’ve been going to this bakery for years, and I really love it. I usually go here for special occasions such as picking up a birthday cake (the Grand Mariner mousse being the go-to flavor).

Of course, they’ve got plenty of other things besides cakes, from breads to flaky savory turnovers. I like their mini pastries because you can taste a bunch of different things without over-indulging. XD These are a few of them: mini eclair, mini cream puff swan, and mini napoleon.
