Corduroy

I’ve wanted to try Corduroy for a while now, and a few weeks ago, I finally did! (^__^)v Located near the convention center by Mt. Vernon Square metro station, it’s pretty nondescript from the outside and easy to miss unless you’re looking for it. Actually, I think their website is pretty nondescript as well. It’s plain but easy to navigate, without frilly Flash effects, streaming music, or that infuriating script that forces your browser window to maximize (Rasika, I’m looking at YOU!!).
The inside of the restaurant is very elegant and spare, and my brother and I both agreed that the design must have been Japanese inspired in part.
I guess “spare” is a theme here, because that’s what the menu was. I don’t mind short menus, as I’d rather have very few fabulous selections to choose from, rather than a whole slew of mediocrity. I did get an appetizer, but since I chose the main course as my header pic, I’ll start there. Pictured above is the roast and confit of Guinea hen, with leeks and shitake mushrooms. Mmmm…Guinea hen brings back good memories. I had my first ever Guinea hen at Tom Colicchio’s “Craft” in New York City, and it was fab! This one was equally lovely, with a golden crispy skin and tenderly cooked meat that fell off the bone. Loved it!

Tara Thai

Aah, Tara Thai. I used to come here a lot back in my college days. It’s relatively affordable, and it’s not sports bar food, which was usually the other option back then. I poked around their Yelp page today, and was amused by how varied the reviews are, ranging from “I love it!!” to “Worst Thai food evar omg!!” (paraphrasing). I can’t vouch for its authenticity, having never been to Thailand myself, but it’s fairly decent. I don’t think I’d go out of my way to dine here, but it’s a nice option if you’re in the area. Some people might find the underwater themed decor a little cheesy, but I don’t mind it so much.
My brother and I went to their Rockville restaurant last week when he was visiting for the weekend. I got the pad thai, pictured above. I think it was okay, if a little on the bland side.

CoCo Sala: Part II

The one time I had any savory courses at CoCo Sala was for appetizers, and while the food tasted great, it was also barely there. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I headed over there for a lunch a few weeks ago. Would the portions be just as small? I asked the waitress about the size of the portions very carefully, but it turned out that my concerns weren’t really necessary. I had a salad and a second course, and the portions were just right.
Pictured above is my second course: the artichoke tart (“creamy hearts of artichoke / tomato confit / truffle & tarragon vinaigrette.”) Loved it! The crust was flaky and gorgeous, and the artichokes were bursting with flavor.
